matters of dis-ease: susan taber avila

This exhibition is sponsored by St John Heart Institute

Heart Institute (1)

Susan Taber Avila creates textile artwork to enhance perception of contemporary culture. While stitching is often used for surface embellishment (embroidery) or joining materials, Avila simultaneously develops both the structure and surface of an object through the stitching process. This new body of work focuses on women and their health, riffing off the red dress symbol used by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association to promote awareness of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer of women (and men). The work is sardonically punctuated with healthy messages, reminding all of us to become more aware and pro-active in maintaining our own health and well-being.

Free health screenings courtesy of St. John Heart Institute will be offered on August 7th and October 4th from 6-9pm during the First Friday Art Crawl.
