My work encompasses themes of identity, migration, displacement, belonging, rebuilding life after destructive experiences, and what it means to create a space of one’s own in the world. It evolves from my own cross-cultural identities as an immigrant, South Asian, American citizen, woman, and single mother. As an immigrant, I am the “other” in my adopted homeland, and in my home country, I am an expatriate of Pakistan. My identity, ultimately, is fragmented.
However, outside the contexts of cultures and places, transcending boundaries and categorizations, there is a space where time stands still, and one is in the rhythm of creation. These are the moments when I feel most free. Integrating this sense of freedom into my work, I investigate cosmic interconnectedness through common patterns in the human body, the spirit, and the cosmos. I create spaces that can serve as sanctuaries and retreats from the anxieties and upheavals of life; sites to experience wonderment, meditation, and peace.
