Teresa Wilber is a lettering artist who is taking her traditional works of calligraphy in a new direction. While letterforms have a serve to communicate thoughts and information, Wilber attempts to remove their familiarity by rearranging and expanding the stroke sequences of each letter. Giving new purpose to calligraphic elements, her art can be experienced rather than read. In creating a new set of visual signs and rhythmic forms, her intent is to put a new energy and spirit on the paper, asking the viewer to appreciate the overall line quality and juxtaposition of the marks, along with the contrasts in space, texture and color, ultimately expanding the range of their visual art experience. These artistic renderings feature design from a sculptural viewpoint. They become a tactile and textual presentation for both the traditional and the experimental content.
