August 5 - September 25, 2016

Curated by America Meredith, Savages and Princesses brings together sixteen contemporary Native American visual artists from Oklahoma who reclaim their right to represent their own reality as Native Americans. Whether using humor, subtlety, or irony, the telling is always fiercely honest and dead-on. Images and styles are created from traditional, contemporary, and mass cultural forms.

This work represents an ongoing visual lexicon created by Native artists. It is intended to counteract the disappearance of Native portrayals. It embraces their power to replace stereotypical images created by others that permeate the current pop culture landscape.

This exhibition was made possible with funding from:

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
